Description

Journey into the Unknown is the true story of Noorjehan and Dr Adam Mahomed, a Durban-based couple who, in 1986, lost their three young daughters in a tragic motorcar accident. Crippled with grief, they decided to do everything in their power to face the incredibly difficult challenge of getting on with life without their children and, somehow, find meaning in their loss. They vowed to stay together and support one another and, when advised by Professor Fatima Meer to write about their feelings and experiences, they put their story into words, individually. In 2005, when Noorjehan passed away, Adam was left alone. So he dug out his wife’s papers, combined them with his own and published this book, which alternates between Noorjehan’s writing and Adam’s. Journey into the Unknown is Dr Mahmoned’s contribution to helping others deal with tragedy and grief,  After several book launches – in Durban, Johannesburg, Lenasia and Laudium, Dr  Mahomed is now taking his story to the next level with his new Journey Foundation, the roots of which were sown when Noorjehan and Adam opened the Shahumna Assessment Centre for the Hearing Impaired in Isipingo in 1996. It is named after their three late daughters, Shamima, Humeira and Nadia. Noorjehan and Adam were the first to donate to the Chatsworth Hospice, which is today a large organisation.

In a very short space of time, The Journey Foundation has achieved the following:

  • Funded and founded the Chatsworth Wellness Centre
  • Opened a Renal Dialysis Unit at the Wellness Centre with 9 dialysis machines
  • Formed a partnership with Braun (a German company that manufactures dialysis machines)
  • A partnership with Rotary Club
  • Is starting a bursary fund for The Women’s Cultural Group (publishers of the famousIndian Delights cookery book, which has sold 500,000 copies)
  • Is in discussions with Discovery Health
  • Is setting up a dental unit for the SAI Group at the Gandhi Settlement in Phoenix
  • Is assisting the Islamic Medical Association with setting up dental clinics
